Overcoming Resistance to Work

If you’ve read The War of Art, you know what resistance is. If not, it’s that feeling of difficulty that arises when you don’t want to get out of bed, you don’t want to go to the gym, etc. It shows up when you WANT something, yet you are not taking action on your goal.

When you wake up and realize you are facing resistance, you have a choice. You can choose to either give in and distract yourself with TV, booze, food, porn, drugs, shopping, etc. Or just show up and take a step.

But that awareness of that choice is a huge achievement in your evolution of consciousness. Many people do not realize they are facing a choice there, they simply react to the uncomfortable feelings and either push on out of fear or obligation or give up and do what’s comfortable in the moment. They will make a choice, but they aren’t conscious of it.

Admitting you are facing resistance is a step in the right direction. You have awareness. Next time you feel resistance, watch it and observe it. Observe what it feels like physically. What thoughts are accompanied by it? Ask yourself this question, “Why am I resisting?” It might be because it’s uncomfortable to start. And that might be the ONLY major reason, because right now it’s more comfortable to sit on the couch and watch TV.

Well, maybe if you knew that TV producers love that about humanity, that we will put down our goals and aspirations and give them our consciousness. Some people give their consciousness to the TV or media ALL day long.

Here’s another thought, all those distractions and vices you might do INSTEAD of what you know you WANT to do or become, they are happening for a reason.

Because we as humans are POWERFUL beings.

Powerful creators who, without distraction, would be so evolved and self-reliant that we wouldn’t need to buy products or indulge in fast food, video games, tv, porn, etc.  Ironically, it’s US, the powerful creators, that created these distractions for ourselves. Neat, huh?

So I’m kind of making a point to say that resistance is not your fault. The culture we live in is designed to keep us somewhat passive. Keep calm and carry on. Being a mix between a worker bee and a consumer. Designed to keep us motivated by fear and unease, yet sold products to sooth and distract us from our discontent.

Until you see it and can rise above it by your own choice. You always have a choice! But the first step is recognizing you have a choice! And you are there. If you give in to resistance, don’t get too bent out of shape. But be mindful and notice it. And then realize YOU have the power to choose. Don’t do it because you SHOULD, but because you WANT to.

Your heart’s desire is the fuel.  Obligation is not.

  1. This made me smile, as today as I was talking to a friend about how I’ve lacked the will to start any personal creative projects lately (for a long while now!). I’ve always seen the conspiracy behind it all (tv/media to keep the mass zombified), but can never seem to push myself. I know in the end it lies within me to take action – but dang, it’s difficult sometimes. Reading this has definitely made me reflect further on it, though. I’m off to prioritize!! *flies away* – Dania
